Zeror
Zeror, a Benjamite, was an ancestor of King Saul (1Sa.9.1).
Biography
Zeror was a Benjamite, named in the genealogy of King Saul in 1 Samuel 9:1 as the great-great-grandfather of Saul and son of Becorath. The lineage reads: Kish son of Abiel son of Zeror son of Becorath son of Aphiah, a Benjamite, establishing a distinguished patrilineal ancestry for Israel's first anointed king. While nothing is recorded of Zeror's personal deeds or character, his position in this genealogy meant that he was among the ancestors whose bloodline God chose for the establishment of Israel's inaugural monarchy. He lived during the period of the united monarchy's formation, when the tribes were transitioning from the loose confederacy of the judges era into a more centralized political structure.
Significance
Zeror's significance lies entirely in his position as a link in the genealogical chain leading to Saul, Israel's first king. Biblical genealogies of this kind serve a dual purpose: they establish legitimacy and embed the featured figure in a community with deep roots. Saul's ancestry through Zeror traced back through honored Benjamite lineage, the tribe of Benjamin that produced warriors, judges, and ultimately royal candidates. The selection of Saul from this tribe was itself theologically complex, since the tribe of Judah had been prophetically designated for kingship (Genesis 49:10). Zeror's lineage thus frames Saul's kingship as historically grounded while the narrative arc of Samuel moves inexorably toward David and the covenant of 2 Samuel 7.
