Adadah is an ancient city mentioned in the Old Testament, located in the region of Negev in modern-day Israel. Known today as Khirbet Aro’er. It appears across 1 verse in Scripture.

Biblical History

Adadah appears in a single verse of the Old Testament — Joshua 15:22 — where it is listed among the cities in the southernmost district of Judah's territorial allotment, in the Negev region bordering the desert. The verse groups Adadah with Kinah, Dimonah, and other towns that formed the frontier settlements of Judah's inheritance in the arid south. Though Adadah receives no narrative attention in Scripture and no events are specifically recounted there, its inclusion in Joshua's systematic land distribution reflects the Bible's conviction that every corner of the promised inheritance was intentional — God's covenant with Abraham extended to precise geographical boundaries, and every town in the catalogue, however obscure, represents territory given by divine promise. The Negev settlement list of Joshua 15 preserves a glimpse of Israel's southern frontier during the early settlement period, when communities clung to the edges of the cultivable zone at the interface of the Judean hills and the desert wilderness. These towns would have been exposed to raids from nomadic groups and the pressures of an arid environment, making their settlement and maintenance a challenge throughout the monarchic period. The town of Adadah, like its neighbors in the list, testifies to the breadth of God's intended provision for his people — a land from the Negev to Lebanon, from the Mediterranean to the eastern desert.

Archaeological & Historical Notes

Adadah is tentatively identified with Khirbet Aro'er (also written Aroer), located in the Negev highlands of southern Israel. This site should be distinguished from the more famous Aroer on the Arnon River in Transjordan. Khirbet Aro'er in the Negev lies in the Beer-sheba Valley region and has been investigated through archaeological surveys of the Negev. The site has yielded Iron Age pottery consistent with Judean occupation during the monarchic period, as well as evidence of earlier Bronze Age activity. The general area of the Beer-sheba Valley and northern Negev has been extensively surveyed and excavated, with Tel Beer-sheba (ancient Beersheba) serving as the region's primary excavated urban site. The identification of Adadah with Khirbet Aro'er remains tentative, as multiple small sites in the area could correspond to the biblical town.
