Ai is an ancient city mentioned in the Old Testament, located in the region of Samaria in modern-day Israel. Known today as Et Tell. It appears across 2 verses in Scripture.

Biblical History

This instance of Ai is associated with the region of Samaria and is mentioned in the context of the return from Babylonian exile. Ezra 2:28 and Nehemiah 7:32 record that the men of Bethel and Ai numbered among those who returned to Judah under Zerubbabel following Cyrus's decree of 538 BCE — 223 men according to Ezra's count, 123 according to Nehemiah's. The post-exilic resettlement of Ai alongside Bethel is significant, as it indicates the ancient city retained sufficient identity and recognition to organize a community of returnees under its name even after the destruction and depopulation of the Babylonian period. Nehemiah 11:31 also lists Ai among the towns resettled by Benjaminites after the return, confirming Ai's continued importance as a recognized settlement in the restoration geography of Judah and Benjamin. This Ai in the Samarian highlands, near Bethel, represents the perseverance of Israelite communal memory across the trauma of exile — a group of people identifying themselves with an ancient city and returning to rebuild their ancestral home.

Archaeological & Historical Notes

This Ai near Bethel is generally identified with Et-Tell, a large ruin mound approximately 2 kilometers east of Bethel (Beitin) in the West Bank highlands. Et-Tell has been excavated by Judith Marquet-Krause (1933–35) and Joseph Callaway (1964–72), revealing a major Early Bronze Age city that was destroyed around 2400 BCE and remained largely unoccupied until a small Iron Age I village (circa 1200–1050 BCE) was established. The Iron Age village aligns with the period of early Israelite settlement. The post-exilic Ai of Ezra and Nehemiah would have been a rebuilt community in this same general area. The gap between the Joshua-period Ai and the later resettlement helps explain the discrepancy between extensive biblical references and the limited Late Bronze Age occupation at Et-Tell.
