Arabia
Arabia is a region mentioned in the New Testament, located in the region of Negev in modern-day Israel. Known today as Arabia Petraea. It appears across 2 verses in Scripture.
Biblical History
In the New Testament, Arabia appears most significantly in Paul's Letter to the Galatians, where he recounts that after his Damascus road encounter with the risen Christ, he did not immediately consult human authorities but instead went away to Arabia (Galatians 1:17). The nature and purpose of this sojourn, whether for contemplation, revelation, or early missionary activity, has fascinated interpreters for centuries. Most scholars today associate this "Arabia" with the Nabataean kingdom, whose territory bordered Damascus and extended south through the Transjordan and Negev into the Sinai. The Nabataean connection gains force from 2 Corinthians 11:32, where Paul mentions that the governor (ethnarch) under King Aretas IV sought to arrest him in Damascus, suggesting a conflict that may have originated during his Arabian ministry. In its geographical scope the NT usage of Arabia Petraea evokes the wilderness of Sinai and the mountains of God, perhaps deliberately echoing Elijah's own retreat to Horeb (1 Kings 19), framing Paul's formative period as a new prophetic commissioning.
Archaeological & Historical Notes
The Arabia Petraea of New Testament times corresponded to the Nabataean kingdom, whose spectacular capital Petra has been extensively excavated in modern Jordan. Nabataean material culture, distinctive pottery, carved rock architecture, and a widely distributed script, has been traced across the Negev, Sinai, and Transjordan. The kingdom was formally annexed by Rome as the province of Arabia in 106 CE. Ongoing excavations at Petra, Oboda (Avdat), Mampsis (Mamshit), and other Nabataean sites continue to illuminate the commercial and cultural world Paul would have encountered. The region's arid conditions have preserved remarkable inscriptions and organic remains, providing a vivid picture of first-century Nabataean society.
