Eshan is an ancient city mentioned in the Old Testament, located in the region of Judea in modern-day Israel. Known today as Khirbet et Taiyiba. It appears across 1 verse in Scripture.

Biblical History

Eshan is a town in the tribal territory of Judah, listed in Joshua 15:52 among the cities of the hill country district assigned to Judah following the conquest of Canaan. It appears in a cluster of settlements in the southern Judean highlands, grouped with Arabah, Dumah, and several other towns. The town's single mention provides little narrative detail, but its inclusion in Joshua's careful inventory of Judahite cities demonstrates that it was a recognized administrative unit within the tribe's territorial organization. The hill country towns in this district provided agricultural support and population base for the broader Judahite highland society. Eshan's location in the southern reaches of the Judean hills would have placed it in a landscape of terraced farming and pastoral grazing, typical of the Iron Age settlements of the region. While it plays no named role in the historical narratives of Samuel, Kings, or Chronicles, its listing in Joshua attests its existence as a real settlement in the landscape of early Israelite Judah.

Archaeological & Historical Notes

Eshan is tentatively identified with Khirbet et-Taiyiba (or Khirbet Sam'a) in the southern Judean hills southwest of Hebron. The site corresponds geographically to the cluster of towns listed alongside Eshan in Joshua 15. Survey work in this highland zone has identified Iron Age I and II ceramic assemblages at several candidate sites, consistent with Israelite-period settlement. The southern Judean hills are characterized by abundant ancient terracing, cisterns, and agricultural installations demonstrating intensive occupation during the monarchic period. Systematic excavation of the specific site identified as Eshan has not been undertaken, and the identification remains provisional pending more detailed investigation.
