Biblical History
Eshan is a town in the tribal territory of Judah, listed in Joshua 15:52 among the cities of the hill country district assigned to Judah following the conquest of Canaan. The site corresponds geographically to the cluster of towns listed alongside Eshan in Joshua 15. Survey work in this highland zone has identified Iron Age I and II ceramic assemblages at several candidate sites, consistent with Israelite-period settlement. The southern Judean hills are characterized by abundant ancient terracing, cisterns, and agricultural installations demonstrating intensive occupation during the monarchic period. Systematic excavation of the specific site identified as Eshan has not been undertaken, and the identification remains provisional pending more detailed investigation.
