Eshtaol
Eshtaol is an ancient city mentioned in the Old Testament, located in the region of Judea in modern-day Israel. Known today as Khirbet Deir Shubeib. It appears across 8 verses in Scripture.
Biblical History
Eshtaol is a city in the Shephelah, the foothills of Judah, most closely associated with the tribe of Dan and particularly with the story of Samson. Initially assigned to the territory of Judah (Joshua 15:33) and later mentioned among Dan's allotted cities (Joshua 19:41), Eshtaol and the nearby town of Zorah together form a paired location deeply linked to Samson's life. His family was from Zorah, and the Spirit of the LORD first began to stir him between Zorah and Eshtaol (Judges 13:25). After his death at Gaza, Samson was buried between Zorah and Eshtaol in the tomb of his father Manoah (Judges 16:31). The towns also appear in the narrative of the Danite migration in Judges 18:2–11, when six hundred armed Danites assembled at Zorah and Eshtaol before marching north to seize Laish. This cluster of Eshtaol references places it at the center of the most turbulent episodes of Israel's tribal period, the charismatic but tragic judgeship of Samson and the northward displacement of an entire tribe.
Archaeological & Historical Notes
Eshtaol is identified with Khirbet Deir Shubeib (or alternatively with modern Eshta'ol village) in the Sorek Valley region of the Shephelah in Israel. The Sorek Valley, running from the Judean highlands to the Mediterranean coast, is archaeologically well documented as a border zone between Israelite and Philistine populations during the Iron Age I period. Survey ceramics from sites in the valley indicate occupation from the Late Bronze Age through the Iron Age II, consistent with the Samson narratives. Nearby Zorah (identified with Sar'a) has been more extensively studied, and together the sites illuminate the contested cultural frontier that shaped the Danite tribal experience described in Judges.
