Etam
Etam is an ancient city mentioned in the Old Testament, located in the region of Judea in modern-day Israel. Known today as Khirbet el Khokh. It appears across 1 verse in Scripture.
Biblical History
Etam appears in Chronicles as a town in the tribal territory of Judah, listed among the cities that Rehoboam fortified as part of his defensive network following the division of the kingdom (2 Chronicles 11:6). After the secession of the northern tribes, Rehoboam recognized the vulnerability of Judah's hill country and systematically strengthened key fortresses. Etam is listed alongside Bethlehem and Tekoa as towns that received royal garrisons and provisions of food, oil, and wine. This grouping places Etam in the fertile belt immediately south of Jerusalem, at a strategic elevation commanding approach routes from the Shephelah and the south. The town's fortification by Rehoboam reflects its military value as a defensive outpost on Judah's western flank. Josephus later records that Solomon beautified gardens near a place he called Etam with pleasant streams of water, suggesting an association with springs and water supply that would have made the site valuable long before Rehoboam's time.
Archaeological & Historical Notes
Etam of Chronicles is identified with Khirbet el-Khokh, situated south of Bethlehem near Solomon's Pools in the West Bank. The site commands an elevated position with views across the Judean highlands toward the coastal plain. Solomon's Pools, three large reservoirs constructed in antiquity and expanded in various periods, lie nearby and have traditionally been associated with the water gardens Josephus attributes to Etam. Survey ceramics from Khirbet el-Khokh indicate Iron Age II occupation consistent with Rehoboam's defensive program. The proximity to major water sources further supports the site's strategic importance. Limited excavation has been conducted, but the topographic and ceramic evidence strongly supports the identification.
