Ezem
Ezem is an ancient city mentioned in the Old Testament, located in the region of Negev in modern-day Israel. Known today as Khirbet Asan. It appears across 3 verses in Scripture.
Biblical History
Ezem was a town in the southern reaches of Canaan, in the Negev region, allotted to the tribe of Judah and later also associated with Simeon. It appears in Joshua 15:29 as part of Judah's southernmost list of towns and again in Joshua 19:3 and 1 Chronicles 4:29 in connection with Simeon's tribal inheritance within Judah's territory. The name Ezem means "bone" or "strength" in Hebrew, possibly reflecting the rugged character of the Negev landscape. Like other Negev towns such as Beer-sheba and Hormah, Ezem lay in the dry southern borderlands of the Promised Land — a region critical for controlling access routes between Canaan and the Sinai Peninsula. Simeon's towns in this area placed the tribe as guardians of Israel's southern frontier. Though Ezem does not feature in any major biblical narrative, its faithful inclusion in the tribal allotment lists underscores the comprehensive nature of God's provision of the land. Every town, even those in the arid periphery, was part of the inheritance God had ordained for his people, reflecting his sovereignty over all the land of Canaan from its fertile center to its desert edges.
Archaeological & Historical Notes
Ezem is most commonly identified with Khirbet Asan (or Khirbet 'Asān), located in the northern Negev of modern Israel southeast of Beer-sheba. The site has been surveyed and shows surface evidence of Iron Age occupation, consistent with the Israelite settlement period. The broader Beer-sheba valley region has been extensively investigated, most notably through excavations at Tel Beer-sheba, which have illuminated urban planning, water systems, and administrative structures of Israelite Negev towns. Khirbet Asan itself awaits comprehensive excavation, but pottery surveys confirm ancient habitation. The Negev's role as a frontier zone is well-attested through numerous survey projects documenting Iron Age settlements in the region.
