Hall of Judgment
Hall of Judgment is a structure mentioned in the Old Testament, located in the region of Judea in modern-day Israel. Known today as Jerusalem. It appears across 1 verse in Scripture.
Biblical History
The Hall of Judgment (also translated Hall of Justice or Porch of Judgment) was a specific chamber or hall within Solomon's royal palace complex in Jerusalem. It is described in 1 Kings 7:7: "He built the Hall of Judgment, where he was to pronounce judgment. It was paneled with cedar from floor to floor." This hall formed one component of Solomon's elaborate palace complex, which also included the House of the Forest of Lebanon, the Hall of Pillars, his private residence, and a palace for Pharaoh's daughter. The Hall of Judgment served as the formal space for royal adjudication, the place where Solomon, renowned for his God-given wisdom, dispensed justice to his people. The cedar paneling reflected both the wealth of Solomon's kingdom and the importance accorded to the administration of justice. This setting recalls the ideal of the Davidic king as the embodiment of divine wisdom and equity (Psalm 72:1–2), serving as God's vice-regent to ensure justice for the vulnerable and the oppressed throughout his realm.
Archaeological & Historical Notes
The Hall of Judgment formed part of Solomon's palace complex on the southeastern ridge of Jerusalem, south of the Temple Mount. No direct archaeological remains of Solomon's palace have been identified and excavated, as the area remains largely inaccessible due to the presence of later Byzantine, medieval, and modern construction, as well as political sensitivities regarding the Temple Mount itself. Archaeologists have found contemporaneous tenth-century BC architectural parallels for Solomon's palace descriptions at sites such as Megiddo and Hazor, which also display palatial bit-hilani style structures with columned porches and cedar-paneled halls. The detailed architectural description in 1 Kings 7 is consistent with known ancient Near Eastern palace architecture of the Iron Age IIA period.
