Hall of the Throne
Hall of the Throne is a structure mentioned in the Old Testament, located in the region of Judea in modern-day Israel. Known today as Jerusalem. It appears across 1 verse in Scripture.
Biblical History
The Hall of the Throne, also called the Hall of Judgment or the porch of the throne (1 Kings 7:7), was the formal judicial chamber within Solomon's palace complex in Jerusalem. Here Solomon sat upon his renowned ivory throne overlaid with gold (1 Kings 10:18-20) to dispense royal justice and hear cases brought before the king. This hall embodied the ancient Near Eastern ideal of the monarch as the supreme arbiter of justice, reflecting the divine mandate that Israel's king govern with wisdom and righteousness. The queen of Sheba's visit, during which she witnessed firsthand the grandeur of Solomon's court and marveled at his wisdom (1 Kings 10:4-5), likely involved this hall. The throne room represented the intersection of royal authority and divine wisdom, since Solomon had asked God for an understanding heart to judge his people justly (1 Kings 3:9). Its existence underscored Israel's transformation into a full-fledged monarchic state.
Archaeological & Historical Notes
The Hall of the Throne has not been archaeologically identified with certainty. Excavations in Jerusalem's City of David and the Ophel ridge have uncovered monumental Iron Age structures and large ashlar stones consistent with elite construction from the 10th century BC, but palace remains from Solomon's era remain elusive due to the depth of later occupation layers. Ancient Near Eastern parallels, particularly the throne rooms of palace complexes at Megiddo and Hazor, help scholars reconstruct what such a hall may have looked like architecturally and functionally in its regional context.
