Hapharaim
Hapharaim is an ancient city mentioned in the Old Testament, located in the region of Galilee in modern-day Israel. Known today as Et Taiyibeh. It appears across 1 verse in Scripture.
Biblical History
Hapharaim appears in Joshua 19:19 as one of the cities within the tribal allotment of Issachar: 'Hapharaim, Shion, Anaharath.' The tribe of Issachar received a rich agricultural territory in the Jezreel Valley and the hills of lower Galilee, a region celebrated for its fertile soil and agricultural productivity. Jacob's blessing upon Issachar described the tribe as a 'strong donkey, crouching between sheepfolds' who saw that rest was good and bowed his shoulder to bear the load (Genesis 49:14-15), a metaphor for agricultural industry and perhaps subjugation to forced labor. Hapharaim's inclusion in this fertile tribal inheritance places it within one of Israel's most productive regions. While the city receives only this single reference in Scripture, its position within Issachar's cities suggests it was a functioning settlement that contributed to the tribe's agricultural and communal life. The Jezreel Valley region, of which Issachar's territory formed a significant part, served as a major breadbasket for ancient Israel and was crossed by important trade and military routes connecting Egypt to Mesopotamia.
Archaeological & Historical Notes
Hapharaim is generally identified with Et Taiyibeh (modern Taibe), a village situated in the eastern Jezreel Valley in the Lower Galilee region of Israel. The identification is based primarily on geographical position within Issachar's territory and the preservation of a similar ancient name. Archaeological surveys in the vicinity have documented ancient pottery sherds and architectural remnants consistent with Iron Age occupation, supporting the biblical period identification. The broader Jezreel Valley region has been extensively excavated at sites such as Megiddo and Jezreel, providing context for understanding settlement patterns of the Issacharian towns during the Iron Age.
