Kabzeel
Kabzeel is an ancient city mentioned in the Old Testament, located in the region of Judea in modern-day Israel. Known today as Khirbet Hora. It appears across 4 verses in Scripture.
Biblical History
Kabzeel appears in Scripture as a city in the southern reaches of Judah's tribal allotment. It is first mentioned in Joshua 15:21, listed among the towns in the Negev district near the border of Edom, establishing it as part of Judah's frontier settlements. The city gains particular distinction through its association with Benaiah son of Jehoiada, one of David's mighty warriors, who is described as a valiant man from Kabzeel who performed great exploits (2 Samuel 23:20; 1 Chronicles 11:22). Benaiah famously killed two of Moab's mightiest warriors, slew a lion in a pit on a snowy day, and struck down an Egyptian giant with the man's own spear. He later served as commander of Solomon's army. Kabzeel's reappearance under the name Jekabzeel in Nehemiah 11:25 indicates that returning exiles resettled this city after the Babylonian captivity, demonstrating the continuity of Judean settlement in the Negev. The city's location on Judah's southern frontier made it a significant defensive outpost, and its production of a warrior of Benaiah's caliber testifies to the hardy character of its inhabitants.
Archaeological & Historical Notes
Kabzeel is identified with Khirbet Hora (also known as Khirbet Gharreh), located in the northeastern Negev region near the modern city of Arad. The site lies in the semi-arid zone that formed the southern boundary of Judean settlement, consistent with its listing among Judah's southernmost cities in Joshua 15. Archaeological surveys have identified Iron Age pottery at the site, supporting occupation during the period of the Israelite monarchy. The surrounding area contains numerous small Iron Age fortresses and agricultural installations that formed a defensive network along Judah's southern border with Edom. The region's identification as frontier territory accords well with the biblical portrait of Kabzeel as home to hardened warriors like Benaiah. No major excavation has been conducted at the site.
