Lower Pool
Lower Pool is a body of water mentioned in the Old Testament, located in the region of Judea in modern-day Israel. Known today as Jerusalem. It appears across 1 verse in Scripture.
Biblical History
The Lower Pool is mentioned in Isaiah 22:9, where the prophet describes Jerusalem's frantic preparations for an Assyrian siege during the reign of King Hezekiah. Among the defensive measures taken, the people "collected the waters of the Lower Pool" as part of a broader strategy to secure the city's water supply while denying it to the besieging army. This passage sits within Isaiah's oracle concerning the Valley of Vision, a sobering indictment of Jerusalem's reliance on human military preparations rather than trust in God. The Lower Pool functioned alongside other water installations in Jerusalem's complex hydraulic system, which included the Upper Pool (Isaiah 7:3), Hezekiah's famous tunnel, and the Pool of Siloam. Water management was not merely a practical concern but carried theological weight; the city's water sources symbolized God's provision and protection. Isaiah's critique was not of the defensive preparations themselves but of the people's failure to "look to the One who made it" and recognize God as Jerusalem's true defender (Isaiah 22:11).
Archaeological & Historical Notes
The Lower Pool is generally identified with a reservoir in the lower portion of Jerusalem's Tyropoeon Valley, possibly corresponding to the Pool of Siloam or a nearby collection basin at the southern end of the City of David. Hezekiah's water engineering projects, including the famous Siloam Tunnel discovered in 1838 and its associated pools, represent one of the most remarkable hydraulic achievements of the ancient Near East. The Siloam Inscription, found within the tunnel, describes the dramatic moment when two teams of diggers met in the middle. Recent excavations by Ronny Reich and Eli Shukron have uncovered a monumental pool from the Second Temple period near the original Siloam Pool, adding to our understanding of Jerusalem's ancient water systems.
