Meshech
Meshech is a region mentioned in the Old Testament, located in the region of Asia Minor in modern-day Turkey. Known today as Gordion. It appears across 7 verses in Scripture.
Biblical History
Meshech first appears in Genesis 10:2 as a son of Japheth, representing a people group that settled in Asia Minor. The region is frequently paired with Tubal in prophetic literature, reflecting their geographic and cultural proximity. In Psalm 120:5, the psalmist laments dwelling among Meshech and the tents of Kedar, using these distant peoples as metaphors for living among hostile, warlike neighbors far from the peace of Zion. Ezekiel references Meshech prominently in oracles of judgment: in Ezekiel 27:13, Meshech and Tubal are named as trading partners of Tyre who trafficked in slaves and bronze vessels. In Ezekiel 32:26, they appear among the fallen nations in Sheol, warriors whose violence terrorized the living. Most significantly, Ezekiel 38-39 places Meshech under the apocalyptic ruler Gog of the land of Magog, chief prince of Meshech and Tubal, who leads a great coalition against Israel in the latter days, only to be utterly destroyed by divine intervention. Meshech thus represents in Scripture the distant, warlike nations that ultimately stand under God's sovereign judgment.
Archaeological & Historical Notes
Meshech is widely identified with the Mushki people known from Assyrian inscriptions, who inhabited central and eastern Anatolia (modern Turkey). The Mushki appear in records of Tiglath-Pileser I (c. 1100 BC) as a formidable military force. Their territory overlapped with the later Phrygian kingdom, whose capital Gordion has been extensively excavated, revealing monumental architecture, royal tombs (including the famous Midas Mound), and rich material culture spanning the Bronze and Iron Ages. The University of Pennsylvania's excavations at Gordion uncovered fortification walls, megaron-style buildings, and extensive evidence of metalworking. The region's connection to bronze and slave trading aligns with Ezekiel's description of Meshech's commercial activities.
