Asia
Asia is a region mentioned in the New Testament, located in the region of Asia Minor in modern-day Turkey. It appears across 21 verses in Scripture.
Biblical History
In New Testament usage, "Asia" refers not to the entire continent but to the Roman province of Asia, encompassing the western portion of Asia Minor (modern Turkey). This prosperous region became one of the most significant theaters of early Christian mission. Paul's first attempt to enter Asia was redirected by the Holy Spirit during his second missionary journey (Acts 16:6), but his third journey centered on Ephesus, the provincial capital, where he spent approximately three years (Acts 19). His ministry there radiated throughout the province so that "all who lived in Asia heard the word of the Lord" (Acts 19:10). The seven churches addressed in Revelation 1-3, Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, and Laodicea, were all located within this province, illustrating its dense Christian population by the late first century. Paul's letters mention numerous Asian believers and coworkers. Near the end of his ministry, he lamented that "all in Asia have turned away from me" (2 Timothy 1:15), suggesting painful defections late in his life. Asia thus represents both the triumph and trials of early Christian expansion.
Archaeological & Historical Notes
The Roman province of Asia is among the most extensively excavated regions of the ancient world. Ephesus, the provincial capital, has yielded monumental structures including the Library of Celsus, the Temple of Artemis (one of the Seven Wonders), a 25,000-seat theater, and well-preserved civic buildings. Sardis has produced a large synagogue complex attesting a significant Jewish diaspora presence. Pergamum's acropolis reveals the famous altar of Zeus and an impressive library. Laodicea, Smyrna, and other cities of the region have seen substantial excavation in recent decades, confirming the vibrant urban culture that made Asia the economic and cultural heartland of the eastern Roman Empire.
