RevelationChapter 1

Revelation Chapter 1: Meaning

John sees a stunning vision of the risen Jesus and receives a message for seven churches.

Summary
The book of Revelation is a message from Jesus, given to his servant John. It was meant to be shared with seven churches in a region called Asia. John was on an island called Patmos because he had been preaching about Jesus. One Sunday, he heard a loud voice behind him that sounded like a trumpet. When John turned around, he saw something amazing. Jesus was standing among seven golden lampstands. He looked completely different from when he walked the earth. His hair was white as snow, his eyes blazed like fire, his feet glowed like hot metal, and his voice sounded like a rushing waterfall. A sharp sword came out of his mouth, and his face shone as bright as the sun. John was so overwhelmed that he fell down as if he were dead. But Jesus reached out and touched him, telling him not to be afraid. Jesus said, "I am the First and the Last. I was dead, but look, I am alive forever. I hold the keys of death and the grave." Then Jesus told John to write down what he was about to see and send it to the seven churches.

Historical Context

John wrote Revelation around AD 95, when a Roman emperor named Domitian was in charge. Domitian wanted everyone to worship him as a god, and Christians who refused were in serious trouble. Some were put in prison, and some were killed. John himself had been sent to the island of Patmos as a punishment for his faith.

The seven churches John wrote to were real groups of believers in cities near each other in what is now the country of Turkey. They needed encouragement and help. Seeing Jesus as powerful and alive, not defeated, was exactly what they needed to keep going.
