RevelationChapter 11
Revelation Chapter 11: Meaning
Two witnesses preach for God, are killed by the beast, come back to life, and the seventh trumpet sounds.
Summary
John is given a measuring stick and told to measure the temple of God. But he is told to leave out the outer courtyard, it will be given to other nations for 42 months. God sends two special witnesses to speak his message for 1,260 days. These two men have great power. They can stop rain from falling and call down plagues on the earth.
When the two witnesses are done speaking, a beast comes up from the deep and kills them. Their bodies are left in the street of a great city. People from all over the world see their bodies and celebrate, because the two men had brought trouble on them. But after three and a half days, God breathes life back into them. They stand up on their feet, and everyone watching is terrified. A voice from heaven calls them up, and they rise into the clouds.
At that moment, a big earthquake shakes the city. Seven thousand people die, and everyone else is afraid and gives glory to God. Then the seventh and final trumpet sounds. Voices in heaven shout that the kingdoms of the world now belong to Jesus, and he will rule forever. The elders around God's throne fall down and worship him, thanking God for taking his great power and beginning to reign.
Historical Context
This chapter was written to encourage Christians who were being treated badly for their faith. The two witnesses remind readers of Moses and Elijah, two great leaders from the Old Testament who had amazing power from God. The message was clear: God protects his people and will raise them up even if they are harmed.
The seventh trumpet is a big moment. It is not just another warning, it is a victory announcement. It means the end is coming and Jesus will win. This was very encouraging news for people who were suffering under a powerful empire that hated Christians.
