Elon
Elon is an ancient city mentioned in the Old Testament, located in the region of Judea in modern-day Israel. Known today as Khirbet Wadi Illin. It appears across 1 verse in Scripture.
Biblical History
Elon, identified with a city in the Shephelah lowlands of Judah, appears in Joshua 19:43 in the allotment of the tribe of Dan. The city is listed among a cluster of settlements in the foothills territory assigned to Dan, a region that proved difficult for the tribe to hold against Philistine pressure. The Danites ultimately migrated northward to the region of Laish (Judges 18), leaving many of their original cities under Philistine influence or contested control. Elon's mention in a single verse of the tribal boundary list is characteristic of the lesser-known settlements of Dan's original allotment, whose names are preserved in Joshua's careful geographic record even though few appear again in narrative texts. The Shephelah where Elon lay was agriculturally productive, with its rolling hills and valleys supporting grain cultivation and olive orchards. This region became a perpetual flashpoint between Israelite and Philistine ambitions, serving as the backdrop for the Samson narratives (Judges 13–16) and numerous later military encounters. Even in its brevity, Elon's inclusion in Joshua's lists testifies to the thoroughness with which God's gift of the land was documented.
Archaeological & Historical Notes
Elon is tentatively identified with Khirbet Wadi Illin in the Shephelah region west of Jerusalem, based on the preservation of the ancient name in the Arabic toponym. The Shephelah has been extensively surveyed and partially excavated, with sites such as Lachish, Azekah, and Gezer providing rich comparative data for the region's Bronze and Iron Age occupation. Khirbet Wadi Illin itself has not been the subject of major published excavations, but surface surveys in the area have documented pottery from the Iron Age period consistent with Danite settlement. The broader Shephelah archaeology reflects the cultural mixing of Israelite and Philistine populations in this contested border zone, with material culture showing evidence of both traditions at various sites.
