Sosipater (Hastings' Dictionary)
\n Ro 16" called a kinsman of St. Paul, i.e. a Jew, and joined with him in greetings at the close of the Epistle. The name is the same as Sopater (Ac 2u'), and the two m.iy be identical, as Jason, another of those mentioned in Ro 16-', may be identical with the Jason of Thessalonica (Ac 17"); two Mace- donian Christians might naturally be with St. Paul at Corinth. The name Sosipater occurs in the well-known inscription of Thessalonica (CIG ii.
1967) giving a list of Politarchs, as also does that of Secunuus [Kc 20-'). For later traditions see Acta Sanctorum, June vol. v., June 25, p. 4. A. C. Headlam.

International Standard Bible Encyclopedia on Sosipater
Sosipater so-sip'-a-ter (Sosipatros): Sosipater unites with Lucius and Jason in sending greetings to the Roman Christians (Ro 16:21). He is a "kinsman" of Paul, by which Paul means a Jew (Ro 9:3; 16:11,21). It is the same name as SOPATER (which see). "Sopater of Berea" was one of the companions of Paul on his journey from Philippi after his 3rd missionary journey (Ac 20:4). These two are probably the same person, Paul having with him in Corinth, at the time of writing to the Roman Christians, the two Macedonians, Sopater of Berea and Jason of Thessalonica. The name Sosipater is found on a list of politarchs of Thessalonica. ⇒See a list of verses on SOSIPATER in the Bible. S. F. Hunter ⇒See also the McClintock and Strong Biblical Cyclopedia.
