John provides a detailed, intimate encounter between Jesus and Mary, including dialogue and the "Do not cling to me" instruction. Mark's longer ending (16:9-11) notes only that Jesus appeared first to Mary Magdalene, "from whom he had cast out seven demons," and that the disciples did not believe her. The fact that a woman is the first witness would have been counterproductive to fabrication in a first-century context, which scholars cite as evidence for the accounts' authenticity.
