In Matthew, Jesus poses the riddle directly to the Pharisees as a counter-challenge after their series of test questions. In Mark and Luke, Jesus raises the question while teaching in the temple, without a specific audience being challenged. The argument works from the assumption (shared by all parties) that David wrote the Psalms under divine inspiration.
Jesus addresses the Pharisees directly: "What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is he?"
Jesus asks while teaching in the temple; the "large crowd" listened to him gladly.
Brief parallel; Jesus asks how they can say the Christ is David's son when David calls him Lord.
From the triumphal entry into Jerusalem through the crucifixion and burial of Jesus.
