Mark and Luke name Peter and John as the two sent to prepare the meal; Matthew does not specify which disciples. The detail of a man carrying a water jar is striking because this was typically women's work, making the man conspicuous and easy to identify. This may suggest a pre-arranged signal between Jesus and the homeowner.
