All three Synoptics record the disciples' failure to understand, but Mark and Luke explicitly say they were afraid to ask Jesus what he meant. Matthew says they were "greatly distressed" instead. Mark adds that Jesus was teaching privately, not wanting anyone to know his location in Galilee.
