Matthew chapter 23 is Jesus's longest sustained polemic, with seven detailed woes. Mark and Luke compress this to a brief warning about scribes who "devour widows' houses and for a pretense make long prayers." Luke scatters similar woe-sayings throughout his Gospel (11:37-54), delivered at a Pharisee's dinner rather than in the temple.
