About

An octagonal Islamic shrine on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, completed in 691 CE by Umayyad Caliph Abd al-Malik, enclosing the sacred Foundation Stone.

Significance

Built over the rock from which tradition holds Muhammad ascended to heaven during the Night Journey (Isra' and Mi'raj); also venerated as the site of Abraham's near-sacrifice of his son.
