Eleusis

About
The site of the Eleusinian Mysteries — the most important and secret religious rites of ancient Greece, performed annually for approximately 2,000 years in honor of Demeter and Persephone. The initiates (mystai) underwent a secret ceremony in the Telesterion (initiation hall) that was believed to grant them a blessed afterlife and was never revealed on pain of death. Virtually every major figure of antiquity was initiated here.
Significance
The Eleusinian Mysteries initiated virtually every major figure of classical antiquity — Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Sophocles, Pindar, Cicero, and emperors from Augustus to Marcus Aurelius. The rites, kept secret for 2,000 years, are believed to have involved a psychoactive kykeon drink, ritual re-enactment of Persephone's return from the underworld, and a vision of divine light in the Telesterion. The Mysteries represent the most significant 'mystery religion' of the ancient world.
