One of the seven sacred Hindu cities and ancient Pallava capital, known as the 'City of Thousand Temples'; major tirthas for both Shiva (Ekambareswarar) and Vishnu (Varadharaja Perumal), making it uniquely sacred to both sects.
Significance
Kanchipuram is the only city among the Sapta Puri that honors both Shiva and Vishnu as supreme, and Adi Shankaracharya established one of his four mathas (monasteries) here.
