About
The Tirumala Venkateswara Temple (Tirupati Balaji) atop the Tirumala hills in Andhra Pradesh is the richest and most visited religious site in the world, receiving 50,000-100,000 pilgrims daily and collecting over $300 million in annual donations. The main deity, Lord Venkateswara (a form of Vishnu), is believed to fulfill wishes, drawing devotees from all walks of life and all parts of India.
Significance
The Tirupati temple generates more annual visitor revenue than the Vatican or any other religious site on earth. Its wealth — from pilgrims' hair offerings (tonsure), gold, and cash donations — funds one of the world's largest Hindu charitable organizations. The deity Venkateswara is believed by devotees to have taken a loan from the god Kubera to fund his wedding, and devotees' donations go toward repaying this cosmic debt.
