Mathura
Location
About
The birthplace of Lord Krishna (the eighth avatar of Vishnu) and one of the seven sacred cities of Hinduism. Located on the banks of the Yamuna River in Uttar Pradesh, Mathura is at the center of the Braj Bhoomi — the sacred landscape of Krishna's childhood and youth spanning approximately 80 km. The city's over 1,000 temples and its association with the divine love between Krishna and the gopis make it a major pilgrimage center.
Significance
Mathura represents the human face of the divine in Hinduism — the city where God chose to be born as a child, play, love, and delight in the world. Krishna's birth story at Mathura's prison (where his parents were imprisoned by the tyrant Kamsa) and his miraculous escape, childhood in nearby Vrindavan, and eventual slaying of Kamsa are among Hinduism's most beloved narratives. The Bhagavata Purana was substantially composed around the theology of Mathura-Vrindavan.
