About

A reddish volcanic mountain north of Medina, site of the Battle of Uhud (625 CE) in which Muslim forces suffered a significant setback against the Quraysh.

Significance

Seventy companions of the Prophet, including his uncle Hamza ibn Abd al-Muttalib, were martyred here; the battle is frequently referenced in the Quran as a lesson in obedience and faith.
