About

A massive sandstone monolith rising 348 meters above the Australian desert floor, Uluru is the sacred heartland of the Anangu Aboriginal people, who have inhabited the region for at least 30,000 years. The rock is sacred in Tjukurpa (the Dreaming), the foundational knowledge system of the Anangu. Climbing Uluru was banned in 2019 in recognition of its deep spiritual significance. The rock's color shift at sunrise and sunset — from ochre to fiery red — is one of the great natural spectacles.

Significance

Uluru is the most sacred site for the Anangu Aboriginal people — a living embodiment of Tjukurpa, the ancestral stories that define the laws of nature and human society. Dozens of sacred sites around its circumference are connected by Dreaming tracks (songlines) that link the landscape in a web of ancestral narrative. The climb ban (2019) was a landmark recognition of indigenous sacred rights over landscapes that represent living spiritual geography.
