David Platt
Pastor and author - radical discipleship and missions
About David Platt
David Platt is an American evangelical pastor, theologian, and author whose YouTube channel, hosted under the Radical Ministries brand, gathers a substantial archive of his preaching and teaching spanning more than a decade of ministry. Platt came to widespread evangelical attention with his 2010 book Radical: Taking Back Your Faith from the American Dream, which argued that comfort-seeking, consumer Christianity was incompatible with Jesus's call to sacrificial discipleship, and which sold over a million copies and helped catalyze a renewal of missions awareness within American evangelical culture.
Background and Ministry
Platt holds a Ph.D. from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary and served as senior pastor of The Church at Brook Hills in Birmingham, Alabama, from 2006 to 2014. He subsequently served as president of the International Mission Board (IMB) of the Southern Baptist Convention from 2014 to 2018, overseeing the mobilization and support of thousands of international missionaries. He is currently lead pastor of McLean Bible Church in the Washington, D.C. area. He has also served as a council member of The Gospel Coalition.
Theological Position
Platt is a Calvinist in his soteriology, affirming the doctrines of grace including unconditional election and irresistible grace, while maintaining a strong emphasis on human responsibility and the universal proclamation of the gospel. He holds to biblical inerrancy, complementarian views on gender roles in the church, and a broadly Baptist ecclesiology. His preaching reflects a deep integration of Reformed theology and urgent global missions concern: he sees the Great Commission as the organizing principle of the Christian life and the benchmark by which all church activity should be evaluated.
Secret Church
One of the most distinctive features of Platt's ministry is Secret Church, an annual intensive study event in which participants gather for six to seven hours of consecutive Bible teaching, often focused on a single book or theme of Scripture. The event is designed to reflect the experience of persecuted Christians around the world who must meet secretly for extended periods of worship and study. Secret Church recordings form a substantial portion of the YouTube channel's content and represent some of Platt's most thorough expositional work, covering books such as Matthew, Ruth, and Jonah in extended multipart sessions.
Approach to Scripture
Platt's approach to Scripture is expository and Christ-centered. He moves systematically through biblical texts, paying careful attention to the redemptive-historical structure of the canon and consistently connecting Old Testament passages to their fulfillment in Christ. His use of Acts is particularly prominent, reflecting his conviction that the early church's missionary expansion provides the normative pattern for Christian communities today. He also draws extensively on Matthew, Romans, and Genesis in his teaching.
Missions Emphasis
Platt's theological convictions issue in consistent practical application toward global missions. He regularly presents statistics on unreached people groups, challenges comfortable assumptions about pastoral calling and vocational ministry, and frames the everyday choices of ordinary Christians within the context of a world in which billions have not heard the gospel. This characteristic emphasis on 'the Great Imbalance' between gospel access and gospel deprivation gives his preaching a distinctive urgency.
Target Audience
The channel is best suited to evangelical Christians, particularly those within or adjacent to Southern Baptist and Reformed networks, who take seriously the call to global missions and want substantive biblical teaching that connects theology to practical obedience. The Secret Church archive makes the channel particularly valuable as a resource for deep study of specific biblical books and themes.
