Tovia Singer
Orthodox rabbi, Jewish counter-missionary and Hebrew Bible specialist
About Rabbi Tovia Singer
Rabbi Tovia Singer (born September 20, 1960) is an American Orthodox rabbi and the founder and director of Outreach Judaism, an international Jewish counter-missionary organization. Raised in the United States, Singer immersed himself early in Torah, Talmud, and Jewish history, and developed a particular expertise in the textual arguments used by Christian missionaries targeting Jewish communities. He has become one of the most recognized voices in the Jewish world for defending Jewish theological claims against Christian proselytization.
Singer founded Outreach Judaism in 1989 with the explicit mission of responding to Christian missionary activity directed at Jews. The organization provides educational resources, lectures, and personal counseling to Jewish individuals who have encountered missionaries or who are considering conversion to Christianity. Singer lectures extensively around the globe, visiting communities in North America, South America, Europe, and Israel. He has also hosted a radio program on Arutz Sheva's Israel National Radio, and in 2019 relocated to Jerusalem, where he now lives in the Jewish Quarter of the Old City.
Theological Position
Singer's theological position is that of Orthodox Judaism. He holds that the Hebrew Bible, known as the Tanakh, must be read according to its plain meaning and in the context of traditional Jewish interpretation, and that Christian readings of these texts, particularly those that find predictions of Jesus as the Messiah, are based on mistranslation, misquotation, and misunderstanding of the original Hebrew.
Central to Singer's teaching is the argument that the New Testament systematically misrepresents the Hebrew Bible. He subjects specific proof texts, such as Isaiah 7:14, Isaiah 53, Psalm 22, Zechariah 12:10, and Daniel 9, to close philological and contextual analysis to demonstrate that their traditional Christian messianic interpretations cannot be sustained from the Hebrew text. He is equally attentive to what he describes as deliberate alterations of quotations in the New Testament's use of the Septuagint and Hebrew sources.
Approach to Scripture
Singer's approach is forensic and text-focused. He operates with fluency in biblical Hebrew and Aramaic, and brings rabbinic commentaries, including Rashi, Maimonides, and classical Talmudic sources, to bear on disputed passages. He frequently contrasts the Christian reading of a verse with its Jewish interpretive tradition, arguing that the latter is both philologically more defensible and historically more coherent.
He is particularly focused on messianic prophecy. His landmark book Let's Get Biblical: Why Doesn't Judaism Accept the Christian Messiah? systematically addresses the passages most commonly cited in Jewish evangelism, examining each in its Hebrew original and arguing that none of them, when read properly in context, constitutes a reliable prediction of Jesus of Nazareth.
Singer also addresses broader theological questions: the nature of sin and atonement in Judaism versus Christianity, the concept of the Trinity, the doctrine of original sin, and the meaning of the Jewish covenant. He argues that these Christian doctrines represent a fundamental departure from the God of Israel as revealed in the Hebrew Bible.
