1 PeterChapter 3
1 Peter Chapter 3: Meaning
Peter gives advice for marriages, calls all believers to be kind and humble, and says to always be ready to explain their hope.
Summary
Peter gives instructions to wives who are married to husbands who do not believe. He says the best way to influence a husband is not through arguing or many words, but through kind and respectful behavior. True beauty, he says, does not come from fancy hair or expensive jewelry, it comes from a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious to God.
Peter also speaks to husbands. He says they should treat their wives with understanding and honor, since both husband and wife are heirs of God's gift of life together. If husbands don't treat their wives right, it can even get in the way of their prayers.
Then Peter gives advice for all believers. They should be united, compassionate, loving, tenderhearted, and humble. If someone wrongs them, they should not pay back evil for evil. Instead, they should bless that person. God watches over those who do right, but he is against those who do evil.
Finally, Peter says believers should always be ready to give an answer when someone asks why they have hope. They should explain it gently and with respect. It is better to suffer for doing good than for doing bad. Just as Christ suffered, the innocent dying for the guilty, to bring people to God, believers can also trust God when they suffer for doing what is right.
Historical Context
In the first century, many women became Christians while their husbands did not. This was a tricky situation because wives had very little power in Roman society. Peter gave wise advice: instead of arguing, let your good life speak for itself.
Peter also mentioned a confusing topic, Christ preaching to "spirits in prison", which he connected to the time of Noah. This likely means that the message of salvation had a reach even beyond what people could see. The main point was that Jesus is now at God's right hand, with all power and authority.
