1 Peter Chapter 4: Meaning

Peter tells believers to think like Christ when they suffer, use their gifts to serve others, and not be surprised by hard times.

Summary
Peter tells believers to have the same mindset as Jesus when it comes to suffering. Jesus suffered in his body and did not let sin control him. Believers should think the same way, they no longer need to live the way they used to before they knew God. They spent enough time doing things that dishonored God. Old friends may think it is strange that believers have changed. They might even say hurtful things. But those people will one day have to answer to God, who judges everyone fairly. Peter says the end of all things is near, so believers should stay clear-headed and pray. Most importantly, they should love each other deeply, because love covers a lot of faults. They should welcome others into their homes without complaining. And they should use whatever gifts God has given them to serve other people, because God is the one who gave those gifts, and he gets the glory when we use them well. Don't be surprised, Peter says, when painful things happen. Suffering is not strange for a follower of Jesus. Instead, be glad, because sharing in Christ's sufferings means sharing in his glory too. If someone makes fun of you for being a Christian, that is actually a sign that God's Spirit is with you. Just make sure you are suffering for doing right, not for doing wrong.

Historical Context

Peter wrote this during a time when following Jesus was becoming more and more dangerous. The Roman emperor Nero was beginning to blame Christians for problems in the empire. Believers were losing jobs, friends, and in some cases their lives.

Peter wanted these believers to understand that suffering was not a sign that God had abandoned them. In fact, it could be a sign that they were truly following Jesus. He encouraged them to keep going, to serve each other, and to trust God no matter what came.
