EcclesiastesChapter 1
Ecclesiastes Chapter 1: Meaning
A wise teacher says that life without God feels empty and pointless, like chasing after the wind.
Summary
The book starts with a teacher, a wise king in Jerusalem, saying something surprising: everything is empty! He uses the word 'vanity,' which means something like a puff of smoke, here for a moment, then gone. He asks: what does a person really gain from all their hard work?
The teacher points to nature. The sun rises and sets every single day. The wind blows north, then south, then around and around. Rivers keep flowing into the sea, but the sea never fills up. Everything goes in circles. Generations of people come and go, but the earth stays the same. Nothing is truly new, things that seem new have happened before, they're just forgotten.
The teacher was a great king. He tried to study everything and become as wise as possible. But the more he learned, the sadder he felt. He says that great wisdom comes with great grief. Knowing more just means you see more things that are broken and wrong. All of his searching felt like trying to catch the wind.
Historical Context
This book was written by someone called 'the Teacher' or 'the Preacher.' Many people think it was King Solomon, who lived in Jerusalem around 1,000 years before Jesus. Solomon was famous for being the wisest and richest king Israel ever had.
People in ancient times wrestled with the same questions we have today: does life have a point? Does hard work matter? The Teacher was brave enough to ask those questions out loud. The book doesn't start with easy answers, it starts with honest questions.

What This Means Today
It is okay to be honest when life feels confusing or pointless — God can handle those questions.
Working hard is good, but it won't give our life ultimate meaning on its own.
Looking for purpose in things that don't last will always leave us wanting more.
True wisdom starts with being honest about what we don't know.
God is the One who gives life its real meaning — and this book is going on a journey to find that.
