EcclesiastesChapter 6

Ecclesiastes Chapter 6: Meaning

Having wealth, honor, and a long life means nothing if you can't enjoy any of it.

Summary
The Teacher describes something he sees as a great tragedy: God gives a person lots of money, a big family, and a long life, but that person never gets to enjoy any of it. Someone else ends up with all their good things. The Teacher says it would have been better if that person had never been born. He even says a baby who is born and dies right away may be better off than someone who lives a thousand years but never finds happiness. Both end up in the same place, the grave. And all the work in between was for nothing if there was no joy. The Teacher goes on to say that no matter how much people eat, they are never truly full. Their hearts always want something more. He asks what a wise person has that a poor person doesn't, not much, if wisdom doesn't bring real contentment. He ends by saying life goes by fast, like a shadow. Nobody knows what is coming tomorrow. And no one can argue with what God has decided.

Historical Context

People in the ancient world thought that having lots of children, living a long time, and being rich were signs of God's blessing. This was a very common belief in Israel and in the surrounding nations. The Teacher challenges this idea by showing that none of those things bring true happiness on their own.

The idea that someone could have all the things people dreamed of, and still be miserable, was a shocking thought. The Teacher wanted people to see that true joy is a gift from God, not something you earn by gathering enough stuff.
