EstherChapter 4
Esther Chapter 4: Meaning
Mordecai urges Esther to risk her life by going to the king, and she bravely agrees to try.
Summary
When Mordecai heard about the order to kill all the Jews, he tore his clothes, put on rough clothing called sackcloth, and covered himself in ashes. He went into the city and cried loudly. Jews all across the empire were mourning and fasting when they heard the terrible news.
Esther's servants told her that Mordecai was upset outside the palace. She sent a servant to find out what was wrong. Mordecai told the servant everything and gave him a copy of the deadly order. He asked Esther to go to the king and beg for help for her people.
Esther sent a message back saying that anyone who went to the king without being invited could be put to death, unless the king held out his golden staff. And the king had not called for her in thirty days. Mordecai replied with a very important message: "Don't think that just because you're in the palace you'll be safe. If you stay quiet, help will come from somewhere else, but you and your family will die. Maybe God put you here for exactly this moment." Esther made her decision. She asked Mordecai to gather all the Jews in Susa to fast for three days for her. Then she would go to the king, even if it meant death. She said, "If I die, I die."
Historical Context
This chapter is the turning point of the whole book. Esther had to make a choice between staying safe and risking her life to save her people. Going to the king without being called was truly dangerous, Persian law said it could mean death.
Mordecai's message to Esther, that maybe she was placed in the palace for this exact moment, is one of the most famous lines in the Bible. It did not directly mention God, but it pointed to the idea that God was behind everything that had happened. The three-day fast was a serious act of prayer and trust in God before Esther took her brave step.
