EstherChapter 8
Esther Chapter 8: Meaning
The king gives Mordecai Haman's place and lets the Jews write a new law to defend themselves.
Summary
After Haman was punished, the king gave Haman's house and everything he owned to Esther. He also gave Mordecai his special ring, which had been taken from Haman. This ring meant Mordecai now had great power. Esther told the king that Mordecai was her relative, and Mordecai came to stand before the king.
But Esther still had a big problem. The old law said the king's soldiers could attack and kill Jewish people all across the kingdom. Persian law could not be taken back, not even by the king. So Esther got on her knees and begged the king to stop the harm that Haman had planned. The king told Esther and Mordecai to write a new law, whatever they thought was right, and seal it with his ring.
Mordecai wrote a new law right away. The new law said that Jewish people could fight back and protect themselves from anyone who attacked them. This message was sent all over the kingdom by fast horses. When the message reached the city of Susa, people were cheering and happy.
Mordecai left the palace wearing royal robes, blue and white with a gold crown. Jewish people across the kingdom celebrated. Many other people in the land were so amazed that they decided to join them because they saw that God was with the Jewish people.
Historical Context
This chapter takes place in ancient Persia, a powerful empire with strict laws. One of those laws said that once the king sealed a law with his ring, it could never be canceled. That is why Esther and Mordecai needed to write a whole new law instead of undoing the old one.
The king had over 127 provinces in his kingdom, spread across many countries. Getting a message to all of them quickly required fast horses and royal messengers. Mordecai's new position and fancy robes showed everyone that the Jewish people now had a friend in high places.
