Ezer
Ezer was the father or founder of Hushah and a son of Hur of Ephrathah.
Biography
Ezer son of Hur was an ancestral figure of the tribe of Judah, identified in 1 Chronicles 4:4 as the father or founder of Hushah, that is, the ancestral patriarch whose descendants settled and named the town of Hushah in Judah. His father Hur was himself a prominent figure, identified as the firstborn of Ephrathah and the father of Bethlehem, situating Ezer within the distinguished lineage of Judah's most celebrated sub-clan. The Ephrathites of Bethlehem were the clan from which David descended, making this genealogical branch of Judah foundational to Israel's royal history. Ezer's placement in the Chronicler's genealogy reflects the careful preservation of Judah's tribal memory as part of the restoration community's effort to reclaim its identity after the Babylonian exile.
Significance
Ezer's genealogical position as a descendant of Hur of Ephrathah and an ancestor of Hushah connects him to one of the most theologically significant tribal lines in the Old Testament. Ephrathah and Bethlehem are not merely geographic markers but covenant-laden names: Micah 5:2 identifies Bethlehem Ephrathah as the birthplace of the messianic ruler. The Chronicler's preservation of Ezer's name within this lineage reflects the conviction that God's redemptive purposes are woven through generations of ordinary families. Every link in the genealogical chain between Judah and the Messiah is honored. Ezer represents the countless unnamed fathers whose faithful continuation of family lines made possible the eventual fulfillment of the promises given to Abraham and David.
