Havilah
Havilah was a son of Joktan, a descendant of Shem, mentioned in the Table of Nations. (Gen.10.29; 1Ch.1.23)
Biography
Havilah son of Joktan appears in the Table of Nations in Genesis 10:29 and its parallel in 1 Chronicles 1:23. As a son of Joktan and descendant of Shem, he belongs to the Semitic branch of Noah's family tree. Joktan's sons are generally associated with Arabian and South Semitic peoples, and Havilah, whose name likely relates to a root meaning 'to writhe' or possibly 'circle', is thought to be the eponymous ancestor of a people inhabiting a region of the ancient Arabian Peninsula. The Table of Nations presents these figures as the human founders of the diverse nations and cultures that populated the post-flood world, each name representing a branch of the expanding human family.
Significance
As a figure in the Table of Nations, Havilah son of Joktan reflects the biblical vision of a humanity diversified yet ultimately unified through descent from Noah and, before him, from Adam. The careful enumeration of Shem's descendants in Genesis 10 situates Israel's origins within a broader tapestry of peoples through whom God governs history. This Havilah, associated with South Arabian territories, reminds readers that God's interest spans all nations, a truth the New Testament fulfills when the gospel goes to 'every nation, tribe, people and language' (Revelation 7:9), recapitulating the Table of Nations in the community of the redeemed.
