Delphi

About
Perched dramatically on the slopes of Mount Parnassus, Delphi was the most important oracle and religious center of the ancient Greek world, where the Pythia (high priestess of Apollo) delivered cryptic prophecies believed to be the direct word of the god. The sanctuary contained the Temple of Apollo, the omphalos (the 'navel of the world'), the theater, and the stadium for the Pythian Games. The maxims 'Know thyself' and 'Nothing in excess' were inscribed on the temple.
Significance
Delphi was the center of the ancient Greek world in both religious and geopolitical terms — Greek cities consulted the oracle before major decisions including founding colonies, going to war, and making laws. The Oracle of Delphi influenced events from the Persian Wars to Alexander's campaigns. The concept of Apollo as the god of reason, light, and truth, centered at Delphi, fundamentally shaped Western intellectual culture.
