1 JohnChapter 2
1 John Chapter 2: Meaning
John teaches that loving others and keeping God's commands shows we truly know him, and warns against loving the world.
Summary
John tells his readers that he wants them to avoid sin, but if someone does sin, Jesus speaks up for them with the Father. Jesus is completely right and good, and he is the one who paid for the sins of the whole world. John then says there is a simple test for knowing if you truly know God: do you obey his commands? If someone says they know God but ignores what God says, they are lying.
John talks about love as the most important command. It is not a new command, it is the same one from the beginning. He says that if you say you are in the light but hate your brother or sister, you are still in the dark. But if you love others, you live in the light and there is nothing to trip you up.
John gives a strong warning: do not love the world. The world and all its cravings are passing away. The desires of the body, the things our eyes want, and the pride of showing off wealth, none of these come from God. They will not last. He also warns about antichrists, people who left the church because they were never truly part of it. They deny that Jesus is the Christ.
John ends by encouraging believers to stay connected to Christ. The Holy Spirit teaches them what is true. If they stay in Jesus, they do not need to be afraid when he returns.
Historical Context
When John wrote this letter, some teachers had left the church and were spreading wrong ideas. They denied that Jesus was truly the Christ. John calls these people antichrists. They claimed to have special spiritual knowledge, but John pointed out that true knowledge of God shows up in how you live, especially in love and obedience.
John wrote to help regular believers know that they already had the truth through the Holy Spirit's teaching. They did not need these fancy new ideas.
