1 JohnChapter 5
1 John Chapter 5: Meaning
John says faith in Jesus conquers the world, and believers can know for certain that they have eternal life.
Summary
John opens this final chapter by saying that anyone who believes Jesus is the Christ has been born from God. And loving God means keeping his commands, which is not too hard for those born from God. In fact, faith is the very thing that conquers the world. The one who overcomes the world is anyone who believes that Jesus is God's Son.
John then points to three witnesses that confirm who Jesus is: the Spirit, the water, and the blood, and all three agree. God himself has spoken about his Son, and this testimony is the greatest testimony of all. Whoever believes in Jesus has this testimony inside themselves. Whoever does not believe is calling God a liar. The bottom line: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. If you have the Son, you have life. If you do not have the Son, you do not have life.
John says he wrote all of this so that believers can know, not just hope, but actually know, that they have eternal life. He also says we can pray with confidence. When we ask for things that match what God wants, he hears us and we get what we asked for.
John ends with a few final thoughts. Anyone born from God does not keep on sinning, because God's Son protects them. We know we belong to God, while the whole world is under the power of evil. And we know that Jesus came and gave us understanding so we can know the true God. John's last words are a short, strong warning: stay away from idols.
Historical Context
John closes his letter with a list of things believers can be sure about. In his day, people around them worshipped many different gods and idols. False teachers were also trying to make people doubt their faith. John wanted his readers to be certain, not confused.
His mention of staying away from idols at the end was very practical. The cities where these believers lived were full of idol worship. He wanted them to hold on to the one true God, Jesus Christ, and not get pulled away.
