1 JohnChapter 3
1 John Chapter 3: Meaning
John says believers are God's children and must show real love through actions, not just words.
Summary
John wants believers to be amazed at the love God has shown them, he calls them his own children. Right now we are God's children, and even though we do not know exactly what we will be like when Jesus returns, we know this: we will be like him when we see him as he really is. This hope should make us want to keep ourselves pure.
John draws a sharp line between two kinds of people. Those who keep sinning belong to the devil, because sin is against God's law and the devil has been sinning from the beginning. But those who are born from God do not keep on sinning. God's life is in them, and that changes how they live. This is how you can tell who belongs to God and who belongs to the devil, by whether they do what is right and whether they love others.
John then talks about love in a very serious way. He says do not be like Cain, who murdered his brother out of jealousy. Instead, look at what real love is: Jesus laid down his life for us. That is the example. And if you have what someone else needs but you shut your heart and do nothing to help, God's love is not really in you. Love has to show up in real actions, not just nice words.
Finally, John says that when we obey God and love others, we can come to God with confidence. We can ask him for things and know he listens. The big command is this: believe in Jesus and love one another.
Historical Context
John wrote this to a group of believers dealing with people who taught that sin did not matter. These teachers claimed to know God but did not care about living right. John pushed back hard by showing that real love is visible and practical, it costs something.
He also used the story of Cain and Abel from Genesis to show what hate looks like, and used Jesus laying down his life to show what real love looks like. The contrast was meant to be very clear.
