JobChapter 14
Job Chapter 14: Meaning
Job reflects on how short and hard human life is, and wonders if there could ever be life after death.
Summary
Job thinks about how short human life really is. He says people are like flowers that bloom and then wither. They are like shadows that pass and then disappear. He asks God not to make things harder than they already are. Life is hard enough as it is.
Then Job notices something interesting. When a tree is cut down, it often grows back. New shoots come up from the roots even when everything looks dead. But when a person dies, they do not come back the same way. Job asks if there is any hope that a person could live again after death.
Job then has a moment of hope. He imagines what it would be like if God hid him away until His anger passed. Then God could call for Job and Job would answer. God would long for the person He made. That is a beautiful thought. Job thinks God might actually miss him.
But then Job gets sad again. He ends by talking about how hope fades. Mountains erode. Water wears away stones. In the same way, people wear down too. We die and we are gone, and we do not know what happens to our families after we leave.
Historical Context
Job's words about life and death match thoughts found in other ancient writings, including Egyptian and Babylonian poems. People in the ancient world did not have clear answers about what happened after death. They believed in a shadowy place called Sheol where the dead went, but it was not a place of joy.
Job's wish to be hidden away and called back by God later is one of the earliest hints in the Bible that resurrection might be possible. Later in the Bible, especially in the New Testament, that hope becomes much clearer through Jesus rising from the dead.
