JobChapter 26

Job Chapter 26: Meaning

Job answers Bildad with sarcasm, then describes how amazing and powerful God truly is.

Summary
Job responds to Bildad, but he isn't very nice about it. He asks sarcastically how Bildad has helped anyone weak or struggling. He wonders who gave Bildad all of his so-called wisdom. Then Job shifts and starts talking about how powerful God really is. He describes how God holds up the sky over empty space and hangs the earth on nothing. The dead are uncovered before God, and there is no hiding from Him anywhere. Job goes on to talk about how God controls the sea, the clouds, and the heavens. God even defeated the great sea monster called Rahab. Job ends by saying that all of these amazing things, the thunder, the sky, the sea, are just the outer edge of what God does. No one can truly understand how powerful God is.

Historical Context

Job lived in very ancient times, long before the time of Moses. People back then told stories about a great sea monster called Rahab, which stood for chaos and danger. Job uses this image to show that God is stronger than anything scary or powerful in all of creation.

The idea that God 'hangs the earth on nothing' is remarkable. Long before science described it, Job used poetry to say that the earth floats in space. This chapter shows that even suffering people can speak amazing truths about God.

What This Means Today

Even when life is hard, we can still see and praise how great God is.
What we know about God is only a tiny piece of who He really is.
God controls everything — the sky, the sea, and the earth.
We don't have to understand everything about God to trust Him.
The more we learn about creation, the more amazing God becomes.
