JobChapter 5

Job Chapter 5: Meaning

Eliphaz tells Job to turn to God, who punishes the foolish but blesses those He corrects.

Summary
Eliphaz keeps talking. He says that trouble does not just happen by chance. People bring problems on themselves when they do foolish things. He says that just as sparks fly up from a fire, humans are born into trouble. Then Eliphaz tells Job what he should do. He says Job should go to God and ask for help. He points out that God does amazing things. God gives rain, lifts up the poor, and stops the plans of people who think they are clever. Eliphaz ends with a promise. He says that if God corrects you, it means He cares about you. If Job turns to God, he will be healed and restored. He says Job will have peace, safety, and a long life. Eliphaz sounds confident, but he is making Job feel like it is all his own fault.

Historical Context

This story happened long ago in a land east of Israel. At that time, people believed that if you suffered, you had probably done something wrong. Eliphaz was sharing ideas from old wisdom sayings that many people trusted.

His promise that God blesses the obedient was common in the ancient world. People thought that following God's rules would always lead to a good life. The book of Job will show that life is not always that simple.
