ZechariahChapter 13

Zechariah Chapter 13: Meaning

God promises a fountain to wash away sin, will remove false prophets, and will refine a faithful remnant through hard times.

Summary
God promises that one day a fountain will be opened for the people of Jerusalem and all of Israel. This fountain will wash away sin and uncleanness. It is like a spring of clean water that can make people truly pure. God also says He will remove idols completely from the land so no one will remember them. False prophets will be cut off too. If anyone still tries to speak false prophecy, even their own family will confront them. False prophets will be so ashamed of what they did that they will pretend they were farmers instead. Then God says the shepherd will be struck and the sheep will scatter. This points to a leader being hurt and the people around him running away in fear. After this, many people will not survive. But a small group, a third of the people, will be kept alive. God will put them through hard times like silver is purified in a fire. In the end, they will call on God and He will answer them, saying they are His people.

Historical Context

Zechariah wrote this around 520 BC. When Jesus was arrested in the garden of Gethsemane, He quoted this exact chapter. He said the shepherd would be struck and the sheep would scatter, pointing to His own death and how the disciples would run away. Matthew recorded this in his Gospel.

The image of a refining fire is used many times in the Bible. Just like fire burns away the junk in metal to make it pure, God sometimes uses hard times to help His people grow stronger and more faithful. The promise of a fountain to wash away sin points forward to what Jesus did on the cross.
