ZechariahChapter 2
Zechariah Chapter 2: Meaning
Zechariah sees a man measuring Jerusalem and learns God will fill and protect the city Himself.
Summary
Zechariah sees another vision. A man is holding a measuring rope and says he is going to measure Jerusalem, to see how wide and long it is. But an angel runs to stop him and gives a surprising message: Do not bother measuring, because Jerusalem will have so many people that walls cannot hold them all. God Himself will be like a wall of fire around the city, and His glory will shine inside it.
Then God calls out to any of His people who are still living in Babylon and other distant places: Leave and come home! God is going to act against the nations that hurt His people. He says that those who touch His people are like someone poking Him in the eye, it hurts deeply and He will not allow it.
The chapter ends with a beautiful invitation. God says He is coming to live among His people. Even people from many other nations will come and join God's people on that day. The land will be filled with life. God is about to move, so everyone should be quiet and ready.
Historical Context
When Zechariah had this vision, Jerusalem was still mostly in ruins. Its walls had been knocked down by the Babylonians years earlier. The idea of Jerusalem one day being so full of people that walls could not contain it would have sounded amazing and hard to believe.
Many Jewish people had not yet come back home from Babylon. Zechariah's message to them was urgent, God is rebuilding His city, so come back! God's promise to live among His people again was the greatest hope of all. Later, Christians would see this promise fulfilled in Jesus.
